Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma defended Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham after leftist sportscaster Chris Williamson criticized the WNBA for not disciplining her over comments about “transgender” participation in women’s sports.
Williamson wrote on X that Cunningham’s comments were “transphobic” and argued that the league’s decision not to discipline her had contributed to political discourse and hostility toward the “transgender” community. He described Cunningham’s conduct as “objectively detrimental to the league.”
Kuzma questioned that characterization in his response.
“What was transphobic about her comment?” Kuzma wrote. “She said she wants to protect women and young girls in sports and that they should not play against biological men… yeah let’s go ahead and discipline her 😵💫”
Cunningham became a central figure in the debate over “transgender” eligibility in women’s sports after making public comments in July about biological males competing against female athletes and sharing women’s locker rooms. She framed her position around fairness, Title IX and protections for female athletes.
“I’m there to love biological women, and I think there are rights that need to be protected,” Cunningham said at the time, while also stating that she does not hate the “transgender” community. She later described her position as “common sense.”
The comments produced sharply different reactions. Cunningham received criticism from the WNBA players’ union and others who viewed her remarks as harmful to “transgender” people, while several athletes and political figures such U.S. Vice President JD Vance publicly supported her position.
Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom has been among Cunningham’s most prominent supporters. He praised her for maintaining her stance despite the backlash and attended rallies organized in support of her outside Fever games.
Former NBA player Royce White also defended Cunningham and supporters who wore clothing backing her position, arguing that attempts to silence those views raised free-speech concerns.
