Former captain Michael Vaughan believes a strong penalty is needed after Brydon Carse became the latest England cricketer involved in a drinking incident.
Carse was pulled from England’s squad for the second Test against Pakistan after a nightclub incident in Derby on Saturday night resulted in his brief arrest.
Video footage captured the pace bowler handcuffed by police officers, while Durham team-mates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts were also present.
England white-ball captain Harry Brook, opener Ben Duckett, Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson have all faced alcohol-related controversies since last autumn.
Vaughan told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme, so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what’s going to come.
“It’s the only punishment that will really hurt players.”
Independent body the Cricket Regulator confirmed it will investigate, with Vaughan noting it would be harsh if the 31-year-old is singled out.
Vaughan added: “I hope Carse is getting good support around him. He is a character who can be a little bit loose and if you give him a bit of rope he’ll take a huge amount of it. He needs people around him who are giving him better advice.
“I would feel for Carse if he is the one who takes the rap for what has happened over the past nine months, but somewhere, somehow, something has to be done to set a precedent that they won’t stand for that behaviour any more.”
Carse has been replaced by Hampshire pace bowler Sonny Baker in England’s squad for the second Test against Pakistan, which gets underway at Lord’s on Thursday.
Joe Root’s side will be looking to wrap up a series victory after thrashing Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the first Test at Headingley last week.
After opting to leave out Carse, England’s bowling attack delivered in Leeds, with Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue, Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson all among the wickets.
