Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei took a dominant win in the women’s race at the Great North Run as Eilish McColgan withdrew through injury.
Former London marathon winner Kosgei ran much of the 13.1 mile race alone as she finished in a time of one hour, six minutes and 15 seconds, a little under two minutes off the course record she set seven years ago.
Last year’s winner Sheila Chepkirui finished in second place, while Amy-Eloise Neale was the first British athlete to finish, coming fifth overall.
McColgan, who has been recovering from a toe injury suffered at the London Marathon, sustained a foot injury early in the race and pulled out.
American Zouhai Talbi won the men’s race as he pulled clear of defending champion Alex Mutsio in the final stages, clocking 59:47.
Britain’s David Weir landed his 10th Great North Run title in the men’s wheelchair race, and Melanie Woods was victorious in the women’s race.
This year’s race is the 45th edition and an estimated 63,000 runners took part, which included Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
