The San Antonio Spurs have taken the next step in Jayden Quaintance’s long-term development after the rookie big man underwent a planned procedure on his right knee.
Quaintance, selected with the 20th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, was limited to just four games at Kentucky last season as he continued recovering from the ACL tear he suffered while playing for Arizona State.
Even with the injury, the 18-year-old remained one of the draft’s most highly regarded defensive prospects thanks to his shot-blocking ability and athletic upside, convincing the Spurs to invest in his long-term potential.
General manager Brian Wright said the organization carefully reviewed Quaintance’s medical outlook before making the selection.
“We do our homework and we’ve got a great medical team that’s very thorough in their analysis and process,” Wright said.
“We spent time with (Quaintance’s) representatives going through where he is in his rehabilitation process and what the options are. We got comfortable about what that looks like today and then the long-term prognosis as well.”
The Spurs are expected to take a patient approach with the teenager, who could miss the start of next season while continuing his rehabilitation.
Quaintance said he fully trusts the organization’s plan.
“They said their priority is making sure that I’m 100% healthy,” Quaintance said. “So just trusting the medical staff here, that they’re going to be in the best position to be successful.”
