Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, ending their eight-year marriage.

According to court documents obtained by Page Six, the Connecticut Sun center filed the petition Thursday in Fulton County, Georgia, describing the marriage as “irretrievably broken.” The filing states the couple has been separated since July 24.

Griner is also seeking joint legal custody of the pair’s 2-year-old son, Bash. Neither she nor her representatives have publicly commented on the filing.

The couple met while attending Baylor University and married in June 2018.

Their relationship drew national attention in 2022 when Cherelle became a leading advocate for Brittney’s release after the WNBA star was detained in Russia and later sentenced to nine years in prison before returning to the United States in a prisoner exchange.

The couple welcomed their son in July 2024, with Griner saying at the time that motherhood had changed her outlook.

“My whole phone has turned into him now,” she said during an interview with CBS Sports.

The divorce marks Griner’s second marriage to end. She was previously married to former WNBA player Glory Johnson before their split in 2015.
