The Golden State Warriors enter the season facing major questions after making no significant additions to their roster, leaving Stephen Curry with another difficult path toward championship contention.
While the team still has flexibility moving forward, it may not come until the trade deadline, when expiring contracts such as Jimmy Butler’s, Draymond Green’s and Kristaps Porzingis’ could become valuable assets in a blockbuster deal or help create future cap space.
Whether that benefits Curry soon enough remains uncertain.
Another concern is whether elite players are still willing to join Curry in Golden State.
Kevin Durant’s move to the Warriors in 2016 brought two championships but also years of criticism, with many arguing he joined an already dominant team.
According to Draymond Green, that perception may have influenced LeBron James’ decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers instead of the Warriors.
“I ultimately don’t think Bron was ever able to get over the history,” Green said on “The Draymond Green Show.” “And I understand it. I get it. What we ultimately always knew is that’s the hurdle to get over.
“We live in a day and age where everybody who doesn’t have anything to say has something to say. So, he’s going to get crushed if he comes to the Warriors. ‘Aw man, he went to team up with Steph. Aw man, you had to go to them, dah, dah.’ And I think ultimately that weighed in on the decision a lot. That played a big role in the Warriors not landing LeBron.”
The Warriors are no longer the dynasty they once were, but Curry’s legacy may still affect how other stars view a move to Golden State.
Despite approaching his 39th birthday, Curry remains one of the NBA’s elite players, yet the organization continues to search for the right formula to maximize what remains of his championship window.
