Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr believes patience is the right approach, even after the team missed out on several marquee names this offseason.
Speaking to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, Kerr defended the organization’s decision to avoid sacrificing future assets for immediate upgrades.
“[Sometimes] not making a move can be the best thing to do for your future,” Kerr said. “And you keep stacking up good moves and eventually you pounce when you’re ready.”
The Warriors were linked to stars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, but ultimately failed to land any of them. Reports also indicated Golden State had an opportunity to pursue Brown before deciding against it.
Kerr also addressed a viral moment from NBA Summer League, when he jokingly told fans the Warriors had signed James.
“I didn’t even think we were realistically in the running for LeBron,” Kerr said. “It’s just that everyone kept saying we were. It never seemed serious to me despite all the reports.”
Golden State enters the season with an aging core led by Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, but the front office continues to believe injuries, not talent, have been the biggest obstacle in recent years.
The Warriors also focused on the future by selecting Yaxel Lendeborg with the No. 11 pick in the draft.
He quickly impressed during Summer League, helping Golden State capture the title while earning championship game MVP honors.
