Brentford have made contact with the police after a video went viral of a rugby ball being kicked into the Gtech Community Stadium from a high-rise flat during their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool.
The club have commented after footage of the incident was spread around on social media, condemning the actions as “dangerous and potentially very harmful”.
The ball appeared to initially hit the roof of the Gtech’s East Stand but footage later emerged of a coach inside the ground removing it from inside the ground, indicating that it had bounced down to the pitch.
“Brentford Football Club is aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday’s match against Liverpool,” the club said in a statement. “Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful.
“The matter has been referred to the police and the club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution.
“The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken.”
The Gtech, which has hosted the Bees since they moved from Griffin Park in August 2020, is part of a wider development project for the Brentford East district and is therefore surrounded by blocks of flats and other commercial buildings.
Alexander Isak struck a late winner as Liverpool came from behind to beat nine-man Brentford, eight minutes after a wonderful Victor Munoz goal cancelled out Keane Lewis-Potter’s opener for the hosts.
The victory carried Liverpool above Brentford into fifth, with the Bees one place back in the Premier League table.
