The Golden State Warriors are prepared to keep Stephen Curry in the Bay Area beyond the 2026-27 season, with the franchise reportedly open to offering the four-time NBA champion another maximum contract extension.
Speaking on ESPN’s NBA Today, Anthony Slater reported that Golden State is willing to prioritize Curry over its broader long-term financial strategy once he becomes extension-eligible later this summer.
“From my understanding, despite the fact that they do, you know, they’re liking to keep their salary flexibility open long-term and clean books, Steph Curry’s very, you know, exclusive to that,” Slater said. “If he wants a one-year extension at big money, if he wants a two-year extension, the Warriors are very open to that conversation.”
Curry, who turned 38 in March, is entering the final season of his current contract, which will pay him $62.6 million in 2026-27. Under league rules, he becomes eligible to sign an extension in late August.
The report reinforces Golden State’s longstanding commitment to having Curry finish his career with the organization that drafted him seventh overall in 2009. While the Warriors have sought to maintain future salary flexibility as the NBA’s financial landscape becomes increasingly restrictive under the collective bargaining agreement, Curry remains the clear exception.
Despite missing time during the 2025-26 campaign, Curry continued to perform at an elite level. He averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 43 appearances while shooting 46.8% from the field, 39.3% from three-point range on 11.3 attempts per game, and 92.3% from the free-throw line. He also earned another NBA All-Star selection.
Golden State struggled to stay in the Western Conference playoff picture without a fully healthy roster, finishing 37-45 and 10th in the conference before its season ended in the Play-In Tournament.
The Warriors are hoping for a healthier and deeper roster entering 2026-27. Jimmy Butler is expected to return later in the year after recovering from the torn ACL that ended his previous season, while Kristaps Porzingis signed a two-year extension to remain the team’s starting center. Veterans Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton also returned, and Golden State added versatile forward Yaxel Lendeborg with the 11th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Draymond Green is also expected to remain with the franchise after declining his player option in a move designed to provide contractual flexibility before signing a new agreement.
Even with those moves, the Warriors’ championship hopes continue to revolve around Curry. He has spent his entire 17-year NBA career with Golden State, winning four championships, two MVP awards and the 2022 NBA Finals MVP while becoming the league’s all-time leader in three-point field goals.
An extension would further cement Curry’s status as the centerpiece of the Warriors’ franchise, even as the organization balances the financial challenges of building a contender around one of the NBA’s highest-paid players.
