The Minnesota Timberwolves believe Joan Beringer is ready to take on a much larger role in his second NBA season after seeing limited action as a rookie.
With Julius Randle and Naz Reid no longer on the roster, the former first-round pick is expected to receive more opportunities in the frontcourt.
President of basketball operations Tim Connelly praised Beringer’s defensive potential and overall approach to the game.
“I think he’s going to make a huge impact defensively,” Connelly said.
“He doesn’t make mistakes offensively. He’s exactly the type of work-ethic, self-motivated, tough player we’re looking for, and I think he has a physical profile that only a handful of the guys in the league have.”
Although Beringer was initially viewed as a center, Minnesota has expanded his role this summer by giving him minutes at power forward.
Coaches have been encouraged by his ability to handle the ball and defend on the perimeter.
The 19-year-old opened the Las Vegas Summer League with an impressive performance, recording 18 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks in 25 minutes.
He has not played since missing the team’s second game because of back tightness, though the absence was considered precautionary.
