Real Madrid’s basketball section is set for another significant change after sporting director Sergio Rodriguez officially stepped down from his role.
The former club legend informed president Florentino Perez of his decision, which was later confirmed by Real Madrid.
In a message published on X, Rodriguez explained that he had decided to end his time as sporting director after careful consideration.
“After deep reflection, this afternoon I informed the President of my decision to end my time in charge of the sporting direction of our Basketball Section,” Rodriguez wrote.
He thanked the club for the opportunity and highlighted his efforts to help strengthen the basketball project during his time in the role.
“I sincerely thanked him for the opportunity and the trust placed in me during this season. I have passionately enjoyed every moment, with the vision of building a stronger, more sustainable, and more professional section in an increasingly challenging context.
“I leave with pride in the work carried out, valuable lessons learned, and the satisfaction of having found a profession that I am passionate about. I wish Real Madrid every success in the future, and I sincerely hope our paths cross again.
“Thank you to everyone, to each and every employee who is part of this Club. Thank you to all our wonderful fans, who have always stood by us. Hala Madrid!”
Rodriguez’s departure comes amid uncertainty surrounding the leadership structure of Real Madrid’s basketball department.
Reports suggest that several key figures, including deputy general manager Martynas Pocius and basketball operations director Paco Robles, could reconsider their futures depending on upcoming decisions within the club.
The changes follow a difficult season in which Real Madrid finished without a trophy for the first time in 15 years.
Although the team reached the finals of the Spanish Supercup, Copa del Rey, and EuroLeague, it was unable to win any of them.
Despite questions surrounding the club’s direction, head coach Sergio Scariolo is expected to remain in charge, with club president Florentino Perez continuing to support him as Real Madrid prepares for the 2026-27 season.
