The NBA and FIBA are reportedly moving forward with plans to launch NBA Europe at the beginning of the 2027-28 season.

According to The Guardian, the proposed competition would feature 16 participating teams, including 12 permanent members.

The remaining four places would be determined through qualification, with opportunities available to Basketball Champions League finalists and teams competing in a season-ending tournament connected to domestic leagues.

The proposed structure would provide permanent members with guaranteed participation while allowing other European clubs to compete for places through sporting results.

Unlike the original European Super League proposal in football, NBA Europe would reportedly include a qualification pathway accessible to domestic champions.

The competition’s format has attracted interest from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who is reportedly monitoring its development closely.

Perez is believed to view the semi-closed structure as a potential example for future European football competitions.
