Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reportedly taking an active interest in the NBA’s plans to establish a new basketball competition in Europe.

According to The Guardian, the 79-year-old businessman has been regularly requesting updates on the project and pushing for its launch as soon as possible.

Perez reportedly sees NBA Europe as an opportunity to establish a semi-closed competition model that could also influence the future of European football.

The proposed basketball league would guarantee permanent participation for selected clubs while allowing other teams to qualify through sporting results.

Perez previously supported a similar approach when promoting the European Super League, a controversial football competition that was initially proposed in 2021.

The Real Madrid president had previously identified EuroLeague’s existing structure, which features 13 shareholder clubs alongside other participating teams, as a potential model for the football project.

His reported support for NBA Europe represents another indication of his interest in competitions that provide major clubs with greater long-term financial stability.
