LeBron James revealed that he had considered ending his NBA career with the New York Knicks before the franchise won the championship in June.
Speaking during the Philadelphia 76ers’ media day, James said his eventual decision came down to Philadelphia, Cleveland, Golden State, Miami and Minnesota.
Although New York was not among his final five choices, playing at Madison Square Garden had previously appealed to him.
“I had visions of playing in [Madison Square] Garden and finishing my career in the Garden,” said James. “One of the best places I’ve ever played.
“I think it’s the No. 1 arena in the world, as far as for a basketball player. But after they beat San Antonio, I was like, ‘Hey, I can’t.’ I couldn’t do it.”
James explained that joining the Knicks immediately after their championship would have brought too much criticism.
“Y’all wouldn’t have let me lay that down, at all,” said James, referring to the media at large. “But much respect to the Knicks, obviously. An unbelievable team, unbelievable players. Shout out [Jalen Brunson]. I love that guy, he’s unbelievable. But, yeah, I’m happy where I’m at, and I’m looking forward to it.”
New York swept Philadelphia in the second round of the playoffs, winning the four games by an average margin of 22.3 points.
James will still have two opportunities to play at Madison Square Garden during the regular season, including opening night on Oct. 20 and another visit on Feb. 27.
The player also confirmed that he intends to divide his time between New York and Philadelphia.
“Both,” said James. “Multiple residences.”
