J.R. Smith was arrested Tuesday in Texas on a family violence charge, according to local jail records.
Hunt County jail records list Smith as being booked on a charge of assault causing bodily injury family violence.
He remained in the Hunt County Detention Center at the time of the report, with records indicating that no bond had been set.
Smith spent 16 seasons in the NBA and was part of two championship teams.
He won his first title with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 before earning another championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.
Following the end of his NBA career, Smith returned to school at North Carolina A&T State University.
He also joined the university’s golf team and graduated in May 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies.
The former NBA player has previously spent time in jail.
Smith served 24 days after pleading guilty to reckless driving in connection with a 2007 car crash in which one of his passengers died.
