The Charlotte Hornets have expressed interest in acquiring Dennis Schroder as they continue reshaping their roster around Brandon Miller and Coby White, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
“The Charlotte Hornets have been linked with interest in Schroder, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto reported on Wednesday. “It’s worth noting that Hornets executive Jeff Peterson is said to still be a fan of Schroder dating back to their time together in Atlanta.”
Schroder, 32, has two years remaining on his three-year, $44 million contract. The veteran guard is coming off a 2025-26 season split between the Sacramento Kings and Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 10.8 points, 4.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 70 games.
The German guard appeared in 40 games for Sacramento, averaging 12.8 points, 5.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 26.4 minutes per game. After joining Cleveland, his role decreased, as he averaged 8.2 points and 4.3 assists in 21.4 minutes over 30 appearances.
Schroder shot 40.5% from the field and 32.9% from three-point range overall last season, continuing a career trend as a high-volume ball-handler who provides secondary playmaking. Across his 13 NBA seasons, he has averaged 13.7 points, 4.9 assists and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 43.0% from the field and 34.1% from beyond the arc.
Charlotte’s interest comes after a major offseason transformation. The Hornets traded LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves and moved Miles Bridges to the Phoenix Suns, shifting from a young core built around Ball and Bridges toward a more flexible roster centered on Miller and White.
White re-signed with Charlotte on a three-year, $74 million contract and is expected to operate as the team’s primary offensive engine. Adding Schroder would give the Hornets another experienced guard capable of creating offense, defending opposing ball-handlers and organizing second units.
Schroder and Hornets executive Jeff Peterson share history from their time with the Atlanta Hawks organization. Peterson was an assistant general manager in Atlanta when Schroder developed into a full-time NBA rotation player, including a 2016-17 season in which Schroder averaged 17.9 points and 6.3 assists as Atlanta’s starting point guard.
The Hornets finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 44-38 record and reached the Play-In Tournament, but the offseason moves indicate the franchise is prioritizing long-term flexibility while remaining competitive around Miller. Charlotte acquired Naz Reid, Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale and multiple future draft assets through its major trades.
Schroder is also drawing interest from other teams with available trade exceptions. Scotto reported that the Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks are among the teams monitoring the veteran guard, with the Clippers holding a $17 million traded player exception from the John Collins trade and the Bucks possessing a $25.5 million exception created by the Giannis Antetokounmpo deal.
