Miami Heat superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has explained why he decided to change his jersey number from 34 to 7 following his departure from the Milwaukee Bucks.
The two-time NBA MVP spent the previous chapter of his career wearing No. 34 in Milwaukee, where he established himself as one of the league’s top players and helped the Bucks win the 2021 NBA championship.
After joining Miami, however, Antetokounmpo decided to make a change, choosing No. 7 as he began a new stage of his NBA career.
The Greek forward explained that the decision was connected to his respect for the Bucks organization and the people who supported him during his years in Milwaukee.
“Had to get closure. It was a huge chapter in my life. Now, I want to move on, and the reason I’m not wearing 34 is out of respect.
“Not just the organization, but the people that was there with me. 34 will only be worn in Milwaukee. But I’m human. I might change my mind. Maybe next year I might put 34 on. We’ll see.”
