French Open LIVE: Breakout star Rafael Jodar battles Alexander Zverev in quarter-finals

With his serve, Alexander Zverev has an impressive tiebreak record on the Paris clay. A loose forehand from Jodar moves the German two points away, with two points on serve to come.

Zverev hangs tough on the baseline, with Jodar pushing, then pulling the German in with the drop shot. Zverev races to meet it and steer the backhand winner.

Three set points: he only needs one. Zverev finds the first serve and smash. The second seed will take that. A 66-minute opening set after being 5-2 down to the teenager.

Rafael Jodar fends off break point to make it through to the tiebreak. Alexander Zverev was timing his charge, using his deep position to find the angles for the passing shot as he battled from 40-0 lead, but the teenager held firm.

But the teenager has made a fast start to leave Alexander Zverev by a break in the first set, and will serve for the set!

Jodar, 19, began the year raned 168th in the world. He is making his debut in Paris and is bidding to became the first debutant to reach the semi-finals in Paris since a certain Rafael Naadal in 2005. Jodar has the most wins on clay than anyone this season.

An emotional Marta Kostyuk dedicated her victory over compatriot Elina Svitolina to the people of Ukraine after advancing to her first grand slam semi-final at the French Open.

Kostyuk, 23, is the first Ukrainian woman to reach the semi-finals of Roland Garros after winning the final four games of the match to beat her idol Svitolina, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

Kostyuk has won 17 matches in a row and is unbeaten on clay this season. Her opening match in Paris last week came after a missile strike narrowly missed her parents’ home in Kyiv.

A first Ukrainian semi-finalist was guaranteed as Kostyuk played Svitolina, the seventh seed. Last night, at least 18 people were killed in Ukraine after Russia launched a large aerial strike.

Marta Kostyuk is in tears at the start of her on-court victory. She dedicates the win to Ukraine and praises her idol Elina Svitolina. Special moments for her after reaching the semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time, after 25 appearances in the main draw of a grand slam.

”I want to start with this historical match that we played today with Elina. We had a very difficult night again in Ukraine, especially in Kiev, so many people dead, and I want to give this match to the Ukrainian people and to their resilience.

”And of course I want to point out Elina and her incredible impact on Ukrainian tennis, on Ukrainians, and on me and everyone who’s watching.She’s an unbelievable fighter, and I’m so happy to be through the semi-finals, but I want to thank her again for this incredible match.”

That was an amazing final four games from Marta Kostyuk, what a brilliant level.

Kostyuk has now won 16 matches in a row on clay, unbeaten on the surface this season. And at the age of 23, she is through to her first grand slam semi-final. She will play eighth seed Mirra Andreeva on Thursday for a place in the final.

There is a lovely moment at the net as Kostyuk and Elina Svitolina hug. Svitolina has been Kostyuk’s inspiration but is this the passing of the baton? Kostyuk becomes the first Ukrainian woman to reach the final four at Roland Garros.

This is a stunning surge from Marta Kostyuk. From 2-2, the 15th seed has taken off, flashing winners and controlling delicate volleys to win three games in a row. She will serve for place in the semi-finals, leading 5-2 in the decider.

Five games in the decider, five breaks: this time, Mart Kostyuk edges in front with power and poise, the forehand crosscourt at over 90mph followed by a deft pick-up volley.

Then, on the second break point, she shows brilliant reflexes to flick a Svitolina pass that bounced off the top of the net and steer it into open court.
