The Boston Celtics entered the 2026 NBA Draft with more questions than answers, and according to NBA insider Shams Charania, Jaylen Brown’s future has become one of the league’s most closely watched storylines.

Speaking during the second round of the NBA Draft on June 24, Charania reported that Boston is actively engaged in trade discussions involving Brown and has spoken with multiple interested teams. He added that rival executives have sensed a level of purpose from the Celtics during those conversations, although no deal appears imminent.

That development comes only days after Boston failed to land Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was ultimately traded to the Miami Heat. According to reports, the Celtics had offered Brown and two first-round picks in an effort to acquire the former MVP. With Antetokounmpo no longer available, Boston must now decide whether to continue building around Brown and Jayson Tatum or pursue a different roster construction.

Brown remains one of the NBA’s premier two-way wings. The 29-year-old averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists across 71 games during the 2025-26 season, earning All-NBA Second Team honors and finishing among the league’s MVP finalists. His production helped Boston finish 56-26, good for second place in the Eastern Conference behind only the 60-win Detroit Pistons.

Despite that regular-season success, the Celtics suffered a disappointing first-round playoff exit, losing in seven games to the Philadelphia 76ers. The early elimination intensified scrutiny on a roster that won the 2024 NBA championship but has not returned to the Finals since.

One name consistently linked to Boston’s trade discussions is Cleveland Cavaliers star Evan Mobley. Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix said the Cavaliers and Mobley were repeatedly mentioned by league sources when discussing potential Brown destinations.

Mobley, 25, would offer a dramatically different building block. The versatile big man averaged 18.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 blocks last season while shooting 54.6% from the field. He also earned All-Defensive Second Team recognition and remains one of the NBA’s most impactful frontcourt defenders.

A Brown-for-Mobley swap would represent a significant philosophical shift for both organizations. Cleveland could pair Brown’s elite perimeter scoring with Donovan Mitchell, who averaged 27.9 points and 5.7 assists during the regular season. The Cavaliers finished 52-30 and reached the Eastern Conference Finals before being swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks.

For Boston, acquiring Mobley would provide a younger cornerstone alongside Tatum while strengthening the team’s interior defense and long-term flexibility. Mobley is entering the second season of a five-year, $269 million extension, while Brown has approximately $183 million remaining on his supermax contract and is eligible for an additional two-year extension worth up to $141.8 million.

The Celtics did add frontcourt depth during the draft, selecting Chris Cenac Jr. with the 27th overall pick and Dillon Mitchell with the 40th pick. However, those moves are unlikely to alter the franchise’s larger decision regarding Brown.

For now, Charania emphasized that trade talks remain fluid and that urgency could change as the offseason progresses. What is clear is that after missing out on Antetokounmpo, Boston is exploring its options, and Brown’s status has become one of the defining stories of the 2026 offseason.
