Can anyone stop the Oklahoma City Thunder?

The Oklahoma City Thunder completed the only sweep of the first round of the 2026 NBA play-offs, beating the Phoenix Suns 4-0 without really getting out of first gear. OKC’s point guard and MVP favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander coasted through the series, ending game 4 with 31 points and leading the Thunder in scoring in what was an efficient, and frankly inevitable, display of prowess.

It should be enough to put the rest of the league on notice, even if they weren’t already. OKC entered the playoffs widely considered the favorites, including in NBA odds, among pundits, among fans, and among players themselves. Now, they are a force to be feared across the league.

OKC sweeps Phoenix and stakes their claim to the NBA Championship

While the Spurs wrestle with the Portland Trailblazers and pray that Victor Wembanyama can stay fit, and the Boston Celtics stumble against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Oklahoma City Thunder took care of business. A straight sweep with no nonsense is a massive psychological advantage over the other teams. The Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets are both already underdogs in a game against OKC, but after they so thoroughly dispatched the Suns, they start to look scary.

That’s not to mention the genuine physical advantage ending a play-off series in four games gives a team. Playing a hard-fought seven-game series is brutal on the body, and the disparity is palpable when a team that’s just won a series in 7 comes up against a team that had won in 4. OKC should net themselves a week long break before their next match-up, time that is brutal for rest and recovery, especially with the injury to Jalen Williams.

The fact that the Thunder still looked so comfortable even after the loss of Jalen Williams to a hamstring strain in Game 3. It’s unclear when exactly Jalen Williams will return, but it’s expected to be either before or during the next round. The Thunder earning these rest days is crucial to his recovery.

Who could stop the Oklahoma City Thunder?

It’s been an explosive round of play-offs for virtually every team barring the Oklahoma City Thunder. Denver have been locked in a phenomenal battle with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Lebron James has rolled back the years as he carries a battered Lakers roster in a series with the Rockets, while OKC deployed their well-oiled basketball machine and steamrolled the Suns.

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs are still a credible threat to the Thunder: Wembanyama may have gone down with a concussion in Game 2, but returned in Game 4 with 4 steals and 7 blocks, proving he hadn’t lost a step. The Boston Celtics also looked relatively comfortable against the 76ers. They may have dropped a game, but as a team that lives or dies by the 3-pointer, there will be nights where those shots just don’t fall, and that has negligible influence over 7 games. Both can take the fight to OKC over 7 games, but they require a fully fit and firing roster, and the increased load compared to the Thunder could be a huge factor when we get to the NBA finals.
