Steve Kerr will remain in charge of the Golden State Warriors after deciding to return for another two seasons, extending a partnership with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green that has defined one of the NBA’s most successful eras.
Kerr took over Golden State in 2014 and immediately helped reshape the franchise. The Warriors captured their first championship under him in 2015 and ultimately won four titles during an eight-year stretch.
His approach included giving Curry enormous offensive freedom, developing productive roles for players throughout the roster and building a relationship with Green that survived difficult moments.
Kerr’s own playing career also influenced his coaching philosophy. Before becoming a coach, he won five championships while playing alongside stars such as Michael Jordan, David Robinson and Tim Duncan, giving him experience with the sacrifices required from role players.
Golden State’s run under Kerr began quickly, with the 2015 championship followed by a historic 73-win regular season in 2015-16.
Maintaining that level of success became increasingly difficult, and the Warriors have not advanced beyond the second round since winning their most recent championship in 2022. They also missed the postseason twice during that four-year period.
After his previous contract expired, Kerr considered whether continuing was the right decision for both himself and the organization.
He ultimately concluded that he still wanted to coach, while the Warriors also wanted him back. Curry and Green supported his return as they approach the later stages of their careers.
Kerr is also approaching the upcoming season with an emphasis on correcting Golden State’s problems.
He reviewed every turnover from last season and intends to focus more heavily on fundamentals, decision-making and mental discipline, while acknowledging that his own coaching also needs to improve.
The decision gives Kerr, Curry and Green at least two more seasons together after already spending 12 years as the foundation of Golden State’s championship era.
For Kerr, the opportunity represents another chance to compete alongside the two longtime Warriors stars before their careers come to an end.
