The Golden State Warriors may have to explore other roster upgrades if LeBron James signs elsewhere, but a trade for Michael Porter Jr. reportedly isn’t expected to be one of them.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor, Warriors coach Steve Kerr remains uninterested in bringing the Brooklyn Nets forward to Golden State.
“Sources say that Steve Kerr didn’t want MPJ in February, and there is little reason to believe he would want him now,” O’Connor wrote.
The report does not explain why Kerr is against adding Porter, whose on-court production has been impressive. The versatile forward averaged 24.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Nets last season.
Instead, O’Connor suggested the hesitation could be tied to Porter’s off-court reputation.
Porter has become one of the league’s more polarizing figures after several public controversies, including criticism from ex-girlfriend Madison Pettis, who called him a “psychopath,” and comments questioning teammate Cam Thomas for not speaking with anyone in Brooklyn’s locker room.
Kerr has built a reputation for managing strong personalities throughout his tenure with the Warriors, and he may view the player as a potential disruption despite his talent.
Porter has played 7 seasons for the Nuggets and Nets. He has averaged 17.3 points and 6.5 rebounds in 397 regular-season games. He has won 1 NBA championship.
