Just days before the 2026 NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards have reportedly not finalized their plans for the No. 1 overall pick.

According to The Athletic, BYU wing AJ Dybantsa remains firmly in consideration, but the organization has also devoted significant attention to Kansas guard Darryn Peterson.

Sources cautioned against interpreting Peterson’s lack of a workout with Utah as evidence that Washington has already settled on its choice.

Leadership is believed to be one of the key factors in the Wizards’ evaluation process. Team executive Michael Winger has publicly emphasized the importance of leadership qualities in a franchise player.

Peterson is widely respected for his work ethic and competitive drive, though some evaluators question whether his quieter personality fits the traditional leadership mold.

Dybantsa, meanwhile, is viewed by many around the league as a more vocal and outgoing presence who demonstrates leadership both on and off the court.
