The Golden State Warriors remain one of the teams actively pursuing LeBron James despite growing speculation around a potential return to the Cleveland Cavaliers or a move to the Eastern Conference.
NBA insider Jake Fischer said the Warriors are still “as involved as any team” in the James sweepstakes, highlighting the possibility of a high-profile partnership between James and Stephen Curry.
“I do think the Warriors are still as involved as any team,” Fischer said. “As much as the reunion with Cleveland and Miami would be storybook, this new all star team, traveling Team USA kind of circus, high entertainment value thing that would exist in Golden State is something that is still very much on the table.”
Golden State’s pursuit of James is built around more than just basketball fit. A partnership between James, Curry and Draymond Green would create one of the league’s most recognizable veteran cores and reunite several players who have represented the United States together on international stages.
The Warriors finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 37-45 record, missing the playoffs and entering an offseason focused on reshaping the roster around Curry. Golden State selected forward Yaxel Lendeborg with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and added guard Lajae Jones with the No. 54 selection.
James remains one of the NBA’s most productive players despite entering his 24th season. The 41-year-old averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games during the 2025-26 season while helping the Los Angeles Lakers finish 53-29 and win the Pacific Division.
The Lakers were eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals after being swept 4-0 by the Oklahoma City Thunder, creating uncertainty around James’ next destination after eight seasons in Los Angeles.
The Cavaliers remain one of the most discussed options because of James’ history with the franchise. Cleveland finished the regular season 52-30 and reached the Eastern Conference finals before losing 4-0 to the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks.
Miami is also considered a serious contender after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from Milwaukee. The Heat retained Andrew Wiggins and added veteran depth while building a roster designed to compete immediately under head coach Erik Spoelstra.
Philadelphia has also entered the conversation after adding Jaylen Brown to a core featuring Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. The 76ers finished 45-37 before reaching the Eastern Conference semifinals.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently warned against assuming James returning to Cleveland is inevitable, noting that multiple reports around the league have pointed toward different possible outcomes.
“I am being very, very cautious,” Windhorst said. “Right now, it’s too scattered.”
James’ longtime agent Rich Paul has received pitches from multiple organizations, with team owners, executives and front offices making direct recruiting efforts. The Cavaliers, Heat, Warriors, Timberwolves and 76ers have all been linked to James.
While Cleveland and Miami offer compelling narratives, Golden State presents a unique opportunity for James to join another championship-level veteran group and create one of the most marketable teams in NBA history.
No decision timeline has been announced, leaving James’ next chapter as one of the league’s biggest offseason storylines.
