The pursuit of Kawhi Leonard reflects a broader pattern for the Golden State Warriors.
Over the past two seasons, the Warriors have also explored moves for LeBron James, Paul George, Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Giannis Antetokounmpo to strengthen a title-contending roster around Stephen Curry.
During that same stretch, the Warriors also dealt with the Jonathan Kuminga situation, which ended with him being traded for Kristaps Porzingis.
Looking ahead, Golden State is expected to revisit Leonard trade talks this offseason, make another push for Antetokounmpo, and consider the possibility of signing LeBron James in free agency.
The team could also choose to keep Porzingis on a deal below his current $30.7 million expiring contract or use him in a sign-and-trade for another high-level player.
Leonard is currently on a $50.3 million expiring deal and has not publicly addressed his future with the Clippers, including whether he would consider an extension.
The Clippers can offer up to $126.1 million over two seasons.
