The Los Angeles Lakers made a major investment in Walker Kessler, and his fit alongside Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves could be crucial next season.
Los Angeles acquired the 7-foot-2 center from Utah for unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, plus swaps in 2028 and 2030, before giving him a four-year, $130 million contract.
Kevin O’Connor described Kessler as “amazing when he was healthy” and an “elite interior defender,” while praising his screening, finishing and ability to catch lobs.
His skill set appears well suited to Dončić and Reaves. Kessler does not need many touches offensively and led the NBA with 4.6 offensive rebounds per game in 2024-25.
Raj Chipalu believes the Kessler-Dončić-Reaves combination could become a “regular-season wins machine.”
JJ Redick already led the Lakers to 53 wins last season despite Dončić and Reaves playing only 41 games together.
Questions remain about Kessler’s shooting and postseason fit, while his health will be important after a torn labrum and shoulder surgery ended his season.
Robert Horry has already identified Kessler as a key piece, while the center said the Lakers’ investment makes him want to “run through a brick wall.”
If Kessler stays healthy, protects the rim and thrives alongside Los Angeles’ two creators, the Lakers’ enormous investment could ultimately pay off.
