Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey has opened up about the challenges of forming genuine relationships as a professional basketball player, explaining that his fame and financial status make it difficult to know whom he can trust.
Maxey acknowledged that the issue extends beyond dating, as even developing friendships can become complicated when people already know personal details about his life before meeting him.
“It is hard. I wouldn’t even just say to date. It’s hard to get friends and build relationships with people because of who you are. And, like you said, the internet is a crazy place now.”
The 76ers guard pointed to social media and the internet as additional obstacles, noting that people can easily create false identities and present themselves differently online.
“People can hide behind that screen and say whatever they want to say, and put whatever face they want to put on, and whatever body, whatever, you know. And they can change themselves.”
Maxey explained that public figures do not have the same level of anonymity.
While strangers can learn extensive information about him through a simple online search, he often knows very little about the people approaching him.
“And you can’t. Basically, everyone knows everything. Everybody knows who you are. Everybody can Google you, look up your salary, look up how much you make, look up where you live.”
The 76ers star suggested that this imbalance makes it harder to determine whether someone is interested in building a genuine relationship or is attracted to his celebrity status and financial success.
“It’s a scary time, man. So you just gotta be careful. I try to be as careful as I can.”
