Tottenham v Newcastle LIVE: Spurs left with another transfer question after back-to-back Premier League losses

“I’m very happy,” he told Sky Sports. “Proud of the team and proud of the club. I know these fans; they are so lovely. They love the club, they love the players. What they want is for us to give them what we have. We tried; it was difficult today, but they never stopped singing. Today is for them.

“Of course we lost so many players (in the summer). But the club worked well. It’s good because it’s a challenge. We need players to step up. Like me, I didn’t play last year.

“Now I have the chance to play, so I need to enjoy every single moment.

“There are so many new players. Even Amar (Dedic) has been unbelievable today.

“Even Anthony (Elanga) now. We have to step up and we have to [be up for] the challenge. With the fans behind us, nobody can stop us.

“I’m not injured. I feel confident now. I trust myself, I trust the manager, I trust the club, I trust the players around me. Even if I didn’t play a lot last year, I had so much training with them. I know them; they know me. I need to enjoy it because last year was tough. This is just the beginning.”

Two new recruits started today in north London: Omar Marmoush for Tottenham, Nico Gonzalez for Spurs. Both came from Man City.

Marmoush didn’t have the worst day. He got himself into a couple of good positions and had a handful of decent chances to score. But he blanked.

Gonzalez, meanwhile, already looks like a fabulous signing. His diagonal ball to Amar Dedic sparked Anthony Elanga’s opener. On the whole, it was a really assured display from the Spaniard.

“We will not panic,” Roberto De Zerbi told Sky Sports. “I know very well where we are going, what the plan is and what difficult problems we could find in our way.

“I am sorry for the fans and sorry for the players for the result but we have to improve and to change two seasons like the last two is impossible in 10 days and with people in the transfer market.

“We have to work hard on the pitch and find the connection with the players because last season before the end of the season we were in the Championship and we stayed up together.

“Now we have to keep clam and focus on improvement. We have a great squad and great players, we can’t use all the players we brought but if we work in this way and believe in ourselves I think we will change the last two seasons. If the rush is more important than the journey we can’t find the solutions to the last two seasons.”

“We also did well last week against Liverpool, therefore it was a step in the right direction again against a strong opponent with huge signings during the transfer window,” he told Sky Sports.

“This is something we were aware of, but how we handled that challenge was amazing.

“It’s always the same as a coach, you try to emphasise where you could potentially stress the opponent. You find gaps, you analyse that, and this is what matters today.

“But in general we try to keep our principles on the pitch independent of the opponent and today it worked two or three times.”

“Tottenham’s start to the season couldn’t have gone any worse,” Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“But it’s going to take time at Tottenham. A lot of new players have come in, they’ve paid top dollar, but they’re quality players, certainly in the midfield area in Fernandes, Tonali.

“We saw signs today in terms of Van Hecke on the ball, but it won’t be finished. I think there will be more to come.

“It’s natural that people will panic a little and Tottenham will go into the market again, there’s no doubt about it.

“Not just because they’ve lost twice, but it makes you more decisive. If you’ve won both games and a couple of games and some of the players looked alright, you’d look at a couple of deals and think ‘maybe we’re OK, maybe we give that players until Christmas.

“That certainly won’t be the case on the back of two really bad defeats.”

“Howe did a top job; we have to respect that,” Yoane Wissa told Sky Sports. “But the new manager comes with a new identity. Every part of the game, we do precise.

“He’s a really dynamic manager; we need to give everything. He’s the best signing for Newcastle.”

Newcastle came into this season off the back of a nightmare summer, where transfer after transfer fell through, while so many big names left. One of them was Sandro Tonali to Tottenham.

Yet with Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa, they look like they’ve got two new stars. They weren’t the ones today who looked like they need new signings before Tuesday; the ones who have spent £320m, on the other hand…

Omar Marmoush had chances to score on his Tottenham debut but failed to convert, while Savio was notable for his absence due to muscular fatigue off the back of his impressive midweek cameo against Charlton.

The defeat will feel most bitter for former Newcastle man Sandro Tonali, who moved to Spurs for £100m in the summer and was jeered off by the away fans when he was substituted, following an unremarkable performance.

Newcastle do the business once again – and Spurs are right back in dire straits.
