Kawhi Leonard’s future with the Clippers is drawing attention around the league as he enters the final year of his contract, according to Shams Charania.
While Los Angeles could choose to extend Leonard and continue building around him, rival teams are reportedly keeping a close eye on his situation in case the Clippers decide to explore alternative directions for the franchise.
“There are multiple teams monitoring Kawhi Leonard here over the next few weeks,” said Charania on Tuesday.
Although the upcoming draft may not directly determine Leonard’s future, Charania suggested more clarity could emerge soon regarding the Clippers’ plans.
“I don’t think the draft is necessarily dependent on Kawhi Leonard’s future, but I think in the coming days and weeks we’ll start to learn a little bit more about the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard and a potential outside team as well.”
The Warriors were among the teams that previously explored a trade for Leonard before the February deadline and could revisit those discussions.
However, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has thus far been reluctant to move the veteran star.
Any team acquiring Leonard would likely need to commit to a long-term partnership, as the 34-year-old is entering the final season of a contract worth more than $50 million.
