Former Brooklyn Nets guard Stephon Marbury believes Cam Thomas deserves a much larger payday.
In an interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Marbury praised the 24-year-old’s elite scoring ability and questioned why his current contract doesn’t reflect his production.
“The guy can flat out score,” Marbury said. “He can flat-out score… I think he’s one of those dudes that should be making big money. I don’t think that he should be making the amount of money that he’s making.”
Thomas re-signed with Brooklyn on a one-year, $6 million qualifying offer on September 4 after a lengthy restricted free agency period. Despite his breakout 2023–24 campaign, where he averaged 22.5 points per game, no long-term deal materialized.
Through the opening two games of the 2025–26 season, Thomas has continued his upward trajectory. He’s averaging 24.0 points, 5.5 assists, and shooting 42.4% from the field, including a 33-point performance in Saturday’s 131-124 loss to Cleveland.
Thomas’ ability to create offense in isolation remains one of the most reliable scoring weapons in the league. His knack for getting buckets from all three levels—mid-range, beyond the arc, and at the rim—has earned him comparisons to pure scorers from past eras.
Marbury, who spent five seasons with the Nets between 1999 and 2004, understands the pressure of playing in New York. He said Thomas’ confidence and composure at a young age remind him of the league’s best offensive guards.
Thomas first drew national attention in 2023 when he became the youngest player in NBA history to record three consecutive 40-point games. Since then, he’s developed into Brooklyn’s primary scoring option.
