A large majority of Americans say they are uncomfortable with transgender athletes competing on sports teams that do not correspond with their sex at birth, according to an analysis from the Pew Research Center.
The survey found that 73 percent of U.S. adults expressed discomfort with such participation. Opposition was highest among conservatives at 91 percent, while 55 percent of progressives also said they were uncomfortable.
Overall, 27 percent of respondents said they were comfortable with transgender athletes competing on teams that do not match their sex at birth, including 13 percent who were “very comfortable” and 14 percent who were “somewhat comfortable.”
The results also showed 77 percent of men and 69 percent of women expressing discomfort. Among people aged 65 and older, that figure reached 80 percent, while 60 percent of adults aged 18-29 also expressed opposition.
The findings come as Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has drawn attention for her position on transgender participation in women’s sports.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” Cunningham told ESPN.
“I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
