The Detroit Pistons have waived veteran guard Gary Harris, league sources told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype on Sunday, September 27.
Harris joined Detroit this offseason as part of a six-team trade with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Pistons acquired Harris and Taurean Prince from Milwaukee, along with John Collins and three future second-round picks in the larger deal.
The move ends Harris’ stay in Detroit before he could appear in a regular-season game for the Pistons. The 32-year-old spent the 2025-26 season with the Bucks, averaging 2.7 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 48 games.
Harris shot 44.2% from the field and 41.2% from three-point range last season, making 0.6 three-pointers per game in 13.8 minutes. He also shot 88.9% from the free-throw line.
The veteran guard has played 12 NBA seasons since Denver selected him with the 19th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He spent the first six seasons of his career with the Nuggets before playing for the Orlando Magic from 2020-21 through 2024-25 and Milwaukee last season.
Harris’ most productive season came in 2017-18 with Denver. He averaged career highs of 17.5 points and 2.9 assists while shooting 48.5% from the field and 39.6% from three-point range in 67 games.
He averaged at least 12 points per game in each of his first four full NBA seasons, including 14.9 points in 2016-17 and 17.5 points in 2017-18. His career numbers currently stand at 9.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game across 666 appearances.
Harris has also been a consistent three-point shooter throughout his career, converting 37.0% of his attempts from beyond the arc. His 2016-17 season remains his best mark at 42.0%.
Detroit’s decision comes after an offseason in which the Pistons reshaped their roster following a 60-22 regular season and first-place finish in the Eastern Conference. Detroit ultimately lost 4-3 to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the playoffs.
The Pistons added Collins and Isaiah Joe through offseason trades while re-signing Kevin Huerter and Javonte Green. They also signed Ausar Thompson to a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale extension.
Detroit’s backcourt already includes Cade Cunningham, Huerter, Daniss Jenkins and Joe, while Harris’ departure creates another roster spot as the team continues finalizing its group for the 2026-27 season.
