Basketball Champions League CEO Patrick Comninos also addressed how current EuroLeague clubs could fit into a future European basketball structure involving the NBA and FIBA.
During Friday’s media session in Badalona, Comninos stated that all 13 licensed EuroLeague clubs would have a place within the proposed ecosystem.
“It has been made very clear in our communication with the Euroleague that all the 13 licensed teams have a place in this new ecosystem,” Comninos said.
Comninos also reiterated the BCL’s long-standing commitment to merit-based qualification, calling it one of the league’s defining principles since its launch ten years ago.
“From the outset, we took tremendous pride in the principle that sport results do matter,” Comninos said. “European competition should be a reward for those who perform well at the domestic league.”
The CEO additionally praised the atmosphere in Badalona during the Final Four and said the league was proud of its progress over the past decade.
“We take a lot of pride for the steps the BCL has taken over the last ten years,” Comninos said.
He also confirmed that there will be no format changes for the 2026-27 Basketball Champions League season, saying stability is important because “basketball is already confusing enough for your average fan.”
