Magic Johnson’s usually active social media presence has drawn attention for something he chose not to discuss.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Pablo Torre, fresh off his reporting on the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard controversy, has shifted his focus toward Dodgers owner Mark Walter and questions surrounding his business dealings.
Part of Torre’s interest centers on EquiTrust Life Insurance Company, which Johnson acquired from Walter in 2014. According to Torre, EquiTrust was also lending $350 million to Walter’s media company.
During an episode of “Pablo Torre Finds Out,” guest Sam Koppelman highlighted Johnson’s silence when EquiTrust was later sold to Amistad Financial in November 2025.
“You’d think, given the scale of this transaction… You’d think that Magic Johnson might celebrate this transaction – the transaction that made him a billionaire – but despite the fact that tweets about almost every single thing in his life, the sale of EquiTrust was not mentioned by @magicjohnson once,” Koppelman said.
Amistad was founded and is managed by Eric Holoman, Johnson’s longtime business associate and the former president of Magic Johnson Enterprises. Holoman had also served as EquiTrust’s president and CEO before becoming Amistad’s “managing founder.”
Torre found Johnson’s lack of public acknowledgment notable considering his previous posts about both EquiTrust and Holoman.
“Which is conspicuous, given how often [Johnson] tweeted about Equitrust and Holoman previously, one might say,” Torre said.
“Conspicuous, indeed,” Koppelman replied.
For Torre, Johnson’s silence surrounding such a significant transaction raises questions worth exploring, particularly given how frequently the Lakers legend discusses his business activities publicly.
Torre said he has contacted Johnson’s representatives but has yet to receive a response.
