The NBA is continuing to target the 2027-28 season for the launch of NBA Europe. Planning remains centered on that window as the league shapes what its first major competition on the continent could look like.

The NBA is now hoping to work with EuroLeague as partners, as opposed to being competitors.

Rather than setting up a separate rival league, the intention has shifted toward cooperation with Europe’s top-tier competition to create a more unified structure.

The NBA’s European expansion is being led by deputy commissioner Mark Tatum. He has taken a leading role in overseeing the strategy, outreach, and negotiations tied to the project.

The league recently held conversations with FIBA at their headquarters in Switzerland.

Those discussions are part of a broader effort to align with international basketball authorities and avoid conflicts over governance and scheduling.

More than 20 existing European basketball and football clubs have reportedly expressed interest in being a part of NBA Europe. That includes teams who currently play in EuroLeague.

The level of early interest suggests that several established organizations are open to exploring a new cross-border competition model.

The NBA has been collecting bids for potential franchises, ahead of the planned launch in 2027.
