Sean Sweeney will remain with the San Antonio Spurs through the end of their playoff run, with the team set to play Game 7 on Saturday night for a place in the NBA Finals.
According to ESPN, Sweeney emerged from a final group of candidates that also included former Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan and Los Angeles Clippers assistant Jeff Van Gundy.
The 41-year-old has played a major role in San Antonio’s success this season as the architect of the team’s defense under head coach Mitch Johnson.
The Spurs made one of the league’s biggest defensive leaps, improving from 25th to third in defensive efficiency, while earning praise from key young players Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.
San Antonio also enjoyed a remarkable turnaround this season. Under Johnson and Sweeney, the Spurs improved by 28 wins, finishing with a 62-20 record that tied for the third-best mark in franchise history.
The team has continued that success into the postseason, making a deep playoff run despite relying on one of the youngest rosters ever to reach this stage.
Sweeney will finish the remainder of the postseason on the Spurs bench — with Game 7 on Saturday night for an NBA Finals berth.
