LeBron James has made one of the most remarkable financial sacrifices of his NBA career, accepting the largest year-over-year pay cut in league history to join the Philadelphia 76ers. After earning $52.63 million with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025-26, James will make approximately $3.88 million in 2026-27 on the first season of his new two-year, $8 million contract with Philadelphia.
The move represents a reduction of roughly $48.75 million in annual salary, underscoring James’ decision to prioritize championship contention over maximizing earnings as he enters his 24th NBA season.
James announced his decision on July 24, ending weeks of speculation following his departure from the Lakers. The 41-year-old chose the veteran’s minimum despite receiving interest from multiple contenders, describing the move as his “last decision” after also considering retirement.
The contract gives Philadelphia one of the league’s most accomplished players without significantly affecting its salary structure. Instead of consuming maximum cap space, James’ minimum deal allows the 76ers to field a star-studded roster featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and newly acquired Jaylen Brown.
Philadelphia had already reshaped its roster earlier in the offseason by acquiring Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George, two future first-round picks and two second-round selections. Brown is coming off a career-best 28.7-point season after winning the 2024 NBA Finals MVP award, giving the 76ers another elite two-way scorer alongside Embiid and Maxey.
James, meanwhile, remains productive despite entering his age-42 season. In 2025-26, he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 51.5% from the field across 60 games for the Lakers. Although his scoring average was his lowest since his rookie campaign, he continued to operate as one of the league’s most versatile playmakers and efficient forwards.
Over 23 NBA seasons, James has compiled career averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists in 1,622 regular-season games. A four-time NBA champion and four-time MVP, he now joins his fourth franchise after previous stops with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Lakers.
Philadelphia’s projected starting lineup now features Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Brown, James and Embiid, while first-round pick Labaron Philon Jr. adds backcourt depth. The combination immediately places the 76ers among the favorites in the Eastern Conference entering the 2026-27 season.
