Jonathan Kuminga’s future remains unresolved, with the Los Angeles Lakers still viewed as one of the teams that could land the 23-year-old forward.

Money has been the primary obstacle. Los Angeles reportedly discussed a role that would put Kuminga in the starting lineup next to Luka Dončić while paying him approximately $10 million per season.

The player has been looking for a significantly larger salary, reportedly around $20 million.

Atlanta now appears less likely to retain him after reshaping its roster with Aaron Wiggins and Lu Dort.

However, finding another destination is complicated by Kuminga’s reported preference to accept less money only if he receives a one-year contract.

That would not work in a sign-and-trade, which requires a three-year agreement. The market has consequently narrowed.

Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints identified the Lakers, Cavaliers and Timberwolves as the three teams that currently make the most sense, while the Clippers have seemingly dropped out of the picture.

Kuminga could address an important weakness for Los Angeles. Rui Hachimura’s exit left the Lakers searching for another athletic wing capable of defending multiple positions.

With September approaching and few quality options still available, Rob Pelinka could revisit Kuminga if the two sides can find common ground on salary and contract structure.
