The New York Knicks reportedly held serious trade talks with the Dallas Mavericks for Jalen Brunson before the 2022 deadline, but negotiations broke down after New York refused to include first-round draft picks, according to The Athletic.
Dallas, which had declined to offer Brunson a four-year, $55 million extension, pushed for packages involving young players like Immanuel Quickley and Quentin Grimes along with draft compensation.
The Knicks, however, remained firm about protecting their future picks.
Months later, New York cleared enough cap space to sign Brunson outright in free agency, while Dallas lost him without receiving anything in return.
Brunson has since become a three-time All-NBA selection and helped lead the Knicks to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999.
Meanwhile, the draft picks New York refused to trade were later used in deals for Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns.
