Julius Erving likes the Philadelphia 76ers’ offseason moves but isn’t ready to consider them championship favorites.
The Hall of Famer praised the team’s additions, including Jaylen Brown.
“What I’ve been doing is just pretty much giving the deal a thumbs up. Jaylen Brown, deal, thumbs up,” Erving said.
“They’re gonna be one of the most talented teams.”
Philadelphia now has LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Brown, Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe, but Erving believes the wide age range could be a factor.
“There’s a big age discrepancy between the youngest, you know, which is V.J. [Edgecombe], and LeBron,” he said. “So how that works, it remains to be seen.”
Erving compared assembling the roster to cooking, saying talent alone doesn’t guarantee success.
“You’re trying to create something special. You’re trying to create something. You go in the kitchen and you mix the ingredients, and then once you put fire under there, you see whether it’s going to be good, great, or okay.”
Erving plans to attend games and remain involved with the franchise.
“I will be going to some of the games, and I will stay a part of the organization as an alumnus.”
The Sixers have plenty of star power, but Erving believes their chemistry will determine how far they can go.
