The Cleveland Cavaliers opened their Eastern Conference first-round series with a 126-113 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Donovan Mitchell led the scoring with 32 points as Cleveland set the tone early in Game 1.

James Harden, who finished with 22 points and 10 assists, emphasized the learning nature of a playoff opener after the game. “I think game one and just for both teams, you really just get a feel for the atmosphere, the details on what both teams are trying to do on both ends of the ball.”

He added a direct assessment of the overall level of execution from both sides. “And whoever is successful usually comes out with the victory. I think tonight we did that. We still didn’t play well. They didn’t play well. But it be like that. So watch film and get better.”

Harden pointed to consistency as the main focus moving forward after missed opportunities in the first half. “We had shots in the first half we missed. This game is a make or miss league. A couple details, scout report details that we messed up on.”

He also highlighted controlling what can be controlled within playoff intensity. “Just stay away from officials and things that we can’t control and just control what we control and keep pushing possession by possession.”

Turnovers and transition defense were also central themes in his breakdown of the game. “I had four turnovers and I think all of them were on me, things that I can control,” Harden said, referencing Toronto’s ability to run off mistakes.

Cleveland’s emphasis on limiting transition chances remained a focal point for the veteran guard. “Turnovers is a way that they get out in transition. Bad shots are another way,” he added.

Defensive execution was credited for slowing down Toronto’s key scorers, including Brandon Ingram. “BI is so good offensively. He gets to a spot he can raise up and it’s hard,” Harden said. “Dean did a great job and did his work before he can get to a spot.”

He also praised Max Strus for his overall impact beyond scoring. “His communication, he’s a dog. So he impacting games in other ways. Whether he makes shots or misses shots.”

Donovan Mitchell’s scoring output also shaped Cleveland’s approach on offense. “It sets the tone early in the series like that. It’s his job. That’s what he gets paid the big bucks for,” Harden said.

Looking ahead, Harden stressed defense as the foundation for sustained success. “Defense wins championships. Offensive ceiling, where does that play into the championship picture? You obviously got to score more points than the other team to win.”

Cleveland will host Game 2 on Monday night, with both teams preparing for tactical adjustments after a high-paced series opener.
