J.B. Bickerstaff emphasized defense as the foundation of Detroit’s 115-94 Game 6 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night, a result that pushed the Eastern Conference semifinal series to a decisive Game 7. The Pistons controlled the second half and limited Cleveland’s shooting to under 30% after halftime.

“You know we did what needed to be done,” Bickerstaff said. “And you know again when we’re at our best you know it’s the defense that’s going to carry us. It’s the physicality.”

He expanded on the team’s approach, pointing to discipline and legal contact as key factors in the win. “I was pleased that we were allowed to play our style of basketball tonight. You know where we can be gansy be physical legally physical legally gansy and just make it difficult on people. And I thought up and down the roster we did a great job of that.”

Detroit’s interior presence also shaped the outcome, with Jalen Duren and Paul Reed providing production on the glass and in the paint. Bickerstaff highlighted that impact directly in his postgame assessment.

“I mean, just the will and determination. I thought it was huge for JD, you know, to be able to get going a little bit. But you know, it starts with the rebounding part of it,” he said. “The four offensive rebounds were huge right. That means he’s imposing his will on the game.”

The Pistons’ depth was a major factor throughout the game, with the coaching staff spreading minutes across the rotation early. Bickerstaff confirmed the approach was intentional.

“Yeah, that was the plan. Again. We have so much depth,” he said. “We just trust these guys and trust the depth that we have and that they can go out and make an impact.”

He also pointed to contributions from role players stepping into defined moments. “So I thought he was great tonight, you know, up and down the roster. I thought we had great production, great intensity.”

On the team’s ability to repeatedly respond in elimination situations, Bickerstaff pointed to composure and consistency. “They just don’t quit. You know the resolve that they have, you know, the belief that they have in one another.”

He added that mental stability has been central to their postseason run. “They just move on to the next play, stay moment to moment and try to win what’s in front of them at that time.”

Looking ahead to Game 7, Bickerstaff emphasized readiness and experience in similar situations. “We understand the moment right? We’ve been through it before in a game seven. You know in this situation similar situation.”

The series now shifts back to Detroit, where both teams will meet Sunday with a conference finals berth on the line. “Our guys don’t want to go home,” he said.
