France has been officially selected as the host of the 2031 FIBA Basketball World Cup, following a decision by the FIBA Central Board on Wednesday in Berlin, Germany.

The tournament will take place from August 29 to September 14, 2031, with games scheduled across Lille, Lyon and Paris. The final phase of the competition will be held in the French capital.

France will host a men’s FIBA World Cup for the first time, adding to its history of organizing major basketball competitions. Lille hosted FIBA EuroBasket 2015, while Lyon and other cities have staged recent FIBA qualifying tournaments.

The country’s recent experience with global events includes hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics, where the French men’s national team secured a silver medal. That infrastructure and operational experience were key factors in the successful bid.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup remains the governing body’s flagship men’s tournament, featuring 32 national teams competing for the Naismith Trophy. The event is held every four years and draws global participation across all continents.

Germany enters the 2031 cycle as the reigning world champion after winning the 2023 edition. The competition continues to expand in scale, with multi-city hosting formats designed to maximize fan engagement and broadcast reach.

Alongside France’s selection, FIBA also awarded the 2030 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup to Japan, with games scheduled in Tokyo from November 26 to December 8.
