Trade speculation around Giannis Antetokounmpo intensified Friday after ESPN’s Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst reported that league executives increasingly believe the longtime Milwaukee Bucks star could be moved before the 2026 NBA Draft.

Bontemps wrote that, after years of uncertainty surrounding Antetokounmpo’s future, “the growing belief around the league is that this time an Antetokoumpo trade will actually happen.” An Eastern Conference executive told ESPN: “It just feels like they’re done with the circus, more than anything. They seem to want a clean break and to move on.”

The timing of the report is significant for Milwaukee, which finished 32-50 and missed the playoffs after a disappointing 2025-26 season. The Bucks ended 11th in the Eastern Conference despite strong production from Antetokounmpo and a veteran-heavy roster that struggled to find consistency on both ends of the floor.

The two-time MVP remained one of the league’s most efficient stars. Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 36 games while shooting 62.4% from the field. He continued to dominate in transition and around the rim, but Milwaukee lacked the defensive depth and perimeter shot creation needed to compete with the conference’s top teams.

The Bucks also dealt with roster imbalance throughout the season. Kevin Porter Jr. averaged 17.4 points and 7.4 assists, while Ryan Rollins added 17.3 points per game. However, Milwaukee finished far behind contenders such as the Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference standings.

Antetokounmpo is entering the second season of a three-year, $175 million contract and holds a player option for the final year. That structure could increase pressure on Milwaukee’s front office to make a decision quickly rather than risk another season of uncertainty.

The Bucks’ organizational direction also came into focus earlier this month during new coach Taylor Jenkins’ introductory news conference. According to ESPN’s report, comments from co-owner Jimmy Haslam contributed to the belief around the league that major changes could be coming this offseason.

If Antetokounmpo becomes available, he would immediately become the most impactful player on the trade market. Teams with draft capital, young talent and salary flexibility are expected to monitor the situation closely ahead of the draft.
