Dozens of Rangers fans ‘chased by cops on horseback’ after being turned away from Celtic Park ahead of Old Firm

DOZENS of Rangers fans have been turned away from Celtic Park ahead of today’s Old Firm clash.

It’s understood the group of supporters were chased by police on horseback, before being held outside the Emirates Arena.

Martin O’Neill‘s men face Rangers in what has become a must-win showdown if they are to clinch a fifth consecutive Scottish Premiership title.

Today’s match marks the SIXTH meeting between the Glasgow rivals this season after three previous league battles and two cup clashes.

Gers will have around 2,200 fans inside the stadium for the derby, but the Union Bears will be absent.

The SPFL have stood by Celtic’s decision to lock out the ultras group following the chaos at Ibrox back in March.

Footage from outside Celtic Park this morning shows dozens of Rangers fans being held outside the Emirates Arena.

Police officers can be seen standing in a line outside the venue, with police horses also at the scene.

It’s understood that a group of fans were chased by cops on horseback, after some supporters were escorted away from the stadium.

It is not clear what sparked the incident.

The group of fans were then led away by cops as dozens of officers surrounded the supporters.

Cops were said to be extra vigilant around tickets, and anyone who could not present one was not allowed near the stadium.

It comes after Celtic said Rangers would be only be able to get their five per cent ticket allocation if the Union Bears were banned.

Rangers referred the matter to the SPFL board, who said they wouldn’t “overrule a risk assessment” carried out by Celtic last Friday.

The Gers decided to take up the allocation, but say they are deeply disappointed with the decision to ban the Union Bears.

Celtic can go within one point of league leaders Hearts today if they beat their city rivals, after the Jambos dropped points at Motherwell last night.

Meanwhile Rangers are all but out of the title fight this season, and would love to hand a hammer blow to their bitter rivals’ title hopes.
