Deni Avdija spoke on Thursday, April 16, as the Portland Trail Blazers prepare for a first-round playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs after advancing through the play-in. The forward discussed matchup pressure, team health, and expectations entering the postseason.
On the Spurs matchup, Avdija said: “I think it’s a nice challenge, especially for a lot of guys first playoff series. We’re young, they’re young, they’re not experienced, we’re not so much experienced. I think it’s a big challenge. I think it’s fun. I think it’s part of the game and we’ll try and make the best out of it.”
He also pointed to Portland’s roster situation after a season impacted by injuries and lineup changes. “I think it’s big time. A lot of our main players have been out and I feel like having them back is really big for our team, especially against a team like San Antonio. It’s a big time for us. Everybody’s healthy. Everybody’s ready to play and that’s about it.”
When asked about preparing for elite opponents and high-level scouting, Avdija emphasized simplicity and execution. “You watch film, you watch and see his weaknesses and just be aggressive. I know there’s not a lot to overthink. It’s only basketball.”
He also addressed the challenge of facing a dominant interior presence like Victor Wembanyama and the importance of Portland’s defensive options. “I think it really helps. Both of them are really great defensive guys. DC improved a lot offensively. Rob has been great offensively. I think we’re capable. We have the weapons defensively, offensively. It’s just how we go out there and compete and that’s about it.”
On backcourt development and Scoot Henderson’s role, Avdija highlighted the guard’s impact across multiple areas of the game. “Scoot has been Scoot regardless. He’s great. He’s reading the game. He developed. His shot is looking great. He’s very big for our team. His explosiveness going downhill is really big for us breaking the paint especially. Defensively this year he’s been locking up.”
Avdija also referenced external expectations and Portland’s belief entering the series. “People didn’t predict us beating the Suns as well. Predictions are only predictions. I think we’re a dangerous team.” He added on the environment around the team: “The Portland fans with the white shirts or whatever kind of shirt they’re going to have in the stands packing the Moda Center. Just being there for us and the whole experience and vibe is going to be very nice.”
