Former NBA guard Damon Jones appeared in a Brooklyn courtroom Tuesday dressed in all black as he pleaded guilty to his role in two alleged mob-linked gambling schemes.
He admitted to using “insider information that I obtained as a result of my relationships as a former player’’ to help bettors.
Prosecutors said the information included updates on LeBron James and Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers, including their availability.
Jones, who had informal ties to the team, said little after the hearing, stating only, “God be the glory.”
He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and faces up to 27 months in prison, with sentencing set for September.
Jones also admitted involvement in a separate poker scheme that used his status as a former NBA player to attract victims to rigged high-stakes games that netted around $7 million.
Describing his role, he said he acted as a “face card” for the group.
“As a face card, my presence as a former NBA player would attract bettors,” he said. “I knew the games were being rigged and players were being cheated.”
He is expected to face an additional 63 to 78 months for the poker scheme, with more than 30 people charged overall in the case.
