CSKA Moscow is reportedly planning to return to the EuroLeague for the 2026-27 season, with no formal regulations currently preventing the Russian club from rejoining the competition.
The eight-time European champion has been suspended from EuroLeague play since February 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Since then, CSKA has continued competing in the VTB United League while remaining a shareholder and stakeholder in EuroLeague Basketball.
The original suspension was introduced in line with recommendations from the International Olympic Committee. With the IOC having recently provisionally lifted its broader suspension, CSKA is now in a position to seek reinstatement.
However, the club’s return is far from guaranteed. EuroLeague members have reportedly been divided over whether Russian teams should be allowed back into the competition, making any decision likely to generate significant debate.
Another major challenge involves hosting games. Playing home fixtures in Russia is expected to remain prohibited, meaning the club would likely need to use a neutral venue.
Serbia and Türkiye have emerged as the leading candidates to stage CSKA’s home games if the team is readmitted.
Although the legal path for a return appears to be open, political tensions and differing views among EuroLeague clubs mean the process remains uncertain.
