The Boston Celtics have shown interest in signing Devin Carter once the former lottery pick clears waivers, according to Jake Fischer.
Fischer reported Friday that the Atlanta Hawks are waiving Carter, who spent his first two NBA seasons with the Sacramento Kings. Boston is among the teams monitoring his availability and could pursue him after he becomes a free agent.
Carter was selected No. 13 overall by Sacramento in the 2024 NBA Draft after an impressive sophomore season at Providence. He has not yet established himself as a consistent NBA rotation player, however, appearing in 74 games over two seasons while averaging 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 14.8 minutes.
The 24-year-old improved his playing time in 2025-26, averaging 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 38 games. He started 12 times and shot 40.1% from the field, although his three-point shooting remained a significant weakness at 26.3%.
Carter’s defensive potential is one of the more notable parts of his profile. He averaged 0.9 steals in 18.4 minutes last season and entered the NBA with a reputation as a physical guard capable of defending multiple perimeter positions.
Boston could give him an opportunity to compete for a reserve role behind Payton Pritchard and Derrick White. Pritchard averaged 17.0 points and 5.2 assists in 79 games last season, while White posted 16.5 points, 5.4 assists and 1.1 steals in 77 appearances.
The Celtics also have Mike Conley available as veteran point guard depth after signing him to a one-year minimum contract. Carter would therefore represent a younger developmental option rather than a replacement for the team’s experienced backcourt pieces.
The reported interest comes after a major transformation of Boston’s roster. The Celtics traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in July for Paul George and significant future draft compensation, reshaping the team around Jayson Tatum, George and White.
Carter’s path to Boston also took an unusual turn this summer. On June 30, Sacramento traded him and a 2033 second-round pick to Atlanta in exchange for the draft rights to Alpha Kaba.
