Cherelle Griner is seeking financial support from estranged wife Brittney Griner as the couple proceeds with their divorce after eight years of marriage.
Cherelle responded to Brittney’s July 30 filing in Fulton County, Georgia, citing a “substantial disparity” in their incomes.
The 34-year-old lawyer reportedly said she is “unable to meet her reasonable financial needs on a monthly basis without continued support.”
Brittney is playing for the Connecticut Sun on a one-year, $1.19 million maximum contract for the 2026 WNBA season.
Both listed July 24 as their separation date, with Cherelle describing the marriage as “irretrievably broken with no hope for reconciliation.”
The couple shares a 2-year-old son, Bash Griner. Cherelle requested joint legal custody and asked the court to determine physical custody and parenting time based on their child’s best interests.
The divorce came shortly after Cherelle attended a Sun game on June 22, when the couple shared a kiss following Connecticut’s win over Chicago.
Brittney and Cherelle married in June 2018 after meeting at Baylor University. Cherelle later advocated for Brittney’s release during her detention in Russia in 2022.
Brittney spent 10 months detained in Russia before returning to the United States in December 2022 through a prisoner exchange involving Viktor Bout.
